Send Email Campaigns with FileMaker Pro and GroupMail

We regularly get requests for information on how to use GroupMail to send email campaigns to contacts stored in FileMaker Pro databases. While it is possible, there are a few steps involved in the initial configuration, but once this is completed, it should work pretty seamlessly.

I have put together a tutorial here describing the steps involved. I am by no means an expert in FileMaker so if you find any inaccuracies in the article, please leave a comment and I will update it as appropriate.

Note: GroupMail Business Edition is required to directly access contacts stored in FileMaker databases. This allows not only mailings to be sent, but the details of the contacts stored in FileMaker Pro databases can also be updated (with the appropriate privileges).

To send a mailing campaign to contacts in a FileMaker database using the Free or Personal Editions of GroupMail, simply export them to a Comma-Separated Text File and use the File Import function in GroupMail. This will duplicate the contents of the FileMaker Pro database in GroupMail and obviously will not allow the details to be updated in the FileMaker database directly from GroupMail. However it will facilitate emailing the contacts without a direct link between GroupMail and the FileMaker Pro database.

@Kailash,there are a number of options for sending mass emails with GroupMail, including using a shared mail server provided by your web host, installing and managing your own mail server (for example http://www.altn.com/Products/Free-Windows-Mail-Server/), using direct send mode in GroupMail or using a 3rd party SMTP sending service such as http://authsmtp.com or http://corporate.smtp2go.com/

There are pros and cons to each of these approaches, if you wish to discuss any of them in more detail drop an email to support@infacta.com
