Email Marketing – Text or Html emails?
There is much debate in the email marketing community on whether you should send “text only”, or html email marketing campaigns ..
Some believe that “text only” is better, as it has more chance of been delivered to the inbox – while on the other hand the html heads believe html is better, as people recognise your brand and are more likely to open/read your message.
So to find out for ourselves (we’re a little geeky like that).. we performed a little experiment of our own – we created three random groups and sent the same newsletter to all three groups. Group 1 just got a “text only” email, Group 2 received a html only email and Group 3 was sent a text & html email at the same time.
The result was … drum roll… we got a far greater response from Group 3 (sending text & html together), then the other two groups (Html heads will be pleased to know they came second
).
So, if you’re planning to send out your next email marketing campaign, our advice is not to choose between one or the other .. in GroupMail you can send both html & text emails at the same time (if you’re interested to know how, this tutorial explains how to get set-up).
If you’ve done your own testing, let us know the results!

The amount of bounce backs I get seems to vary every time I send out an email. I just tried your suggestion of using html and plain text and got more bounce backs than usual. There were no images or links in the mail – just text
Email addresses that I know are valid have come back as ‘recipient rejected’ and ‘could not verify recipient’. What do these terms actually mean?
Hi Claire,
These terms can mean a number of things .. typically they mean that the delivery failed because the email address doesn’t exist, been named wrong, closed or moved.
Normally they supply some more information in the email.. if you send us a couple of these emails to support@infacta.com, we can take a closer look for you.
Thanks
Rob
